Scent Empowerment -- Getting to Know Benzoin

Benzoin comes from the trunk of the towering benzoin tree grown in abundance in the Southeast Asian region. Its main characteristic is the gum resin extract obtained when a trunk is cut, which gives off a captivatingly delectable vanilla scent. For ages now, benzoin has been widely used in preparations for aromatherapy sessions, and even topically, for fragrance and healing.

Benzoin reached the shores of Egypt, Greece and Rome brought by traders from the Arabian peninsula. It became popular and much sought after as a preservative for potpourris and perfumes -- a trend which went on until the present day. Aside from its scent, benzoin was greatly accepted by the Europeans because of its medicinal properties.

Normally, benzoin is sold in pure or absolute form so when it comes in a bottle, it's not easy to get it out because of its thickness. In this case, it needs to be diluted using either alcohol or vodka. Heated vegetable oil poured into the bottle can also help dissolve benzoin. Thinned benzoin treated with ethyl glycol is also available on the market, but is not the type patronized by aromatherapists who stay away from said chemicals. Alcohol-based benzoin tincture may also be purchased in certain drugstores.

Benzoin possesses numerous healing properties, most common of which are the following:
  • counteracts bacteria and fungal infections
  • protects wounds from infections
  • prevents inflammation
  • acts against gas and indigestion
  • relieves lung congestion
  • stimulates circulation
  • acts as antioxidant
  • effective as a deodorant because of its long-lasting scent

Benzoin has proven to be most effective against skin itching, redness or irritation. It has been widely used as a cream to shield chapped skin from further damage and makes it more elastic. As an excellent fixative, Benzoin prolongs the shelf life of oil-based vegetable preparations. As an essential oil, it can serve to complement rubbing balms and massage oils used to provide relief to individuals suffering from sinus and lung disorders. This is done by putting in and stirring about a dozen drops of benzoin essential oil for every ounce of preparation. Alcohol based benzoin may also be used to put together some formulation for cough medication.
